CELEBRATING INDEPENDENT TRAVEL AND ACHIEVEMENTS OF PEOPLE WHO ARE BLIND AND VISUALLY IMPAIRED
The Awareness March is a powerful tradition at Houston White Cane Safety Day, bringing together individuals of all ages and abilities to celebrate independence, promote accessibility, and raise public awareness about the experiences of the blind and visually impaired community. This meaningful walk is a visible reminder of the importance of inclusion, safety, and equal access for all. Join us as we take steps together toward a more informed and inclusive Houston.
Time: 9:00AM
Address: University of Houston, Student Services Center South located at 4455 University Drive, Houston, Texas 77204
Signs and banners are available to march-goers each year, the march is an opportunity to show your support and help spread awareness about independent travel using the white cane, service animals, and other mobility aids. Participants are encouraged to create and carry a sign or banner that celebrates their personal journey, honors someone they support, or shares a message of empowerment, visibility, or inclusion.
Sign & Banner Guidelines:
Keep messages positive, respectful, and on-topic (white cane use, service animals, independent travel, accessibility, etc.).
Signs should be easy to carry and no larger than 24” x 36”.
Avoid materials with sharp edges or long poles for safety.
Feel free to use bold colors and large text to help your message stand out!
Whether you're marching for yourself, a loved one, or the community as a whole, your voice—and your sign—helps light the way toward greater awareness and inclusion.
This year’s Awareness March will follow a great, accessible route designed with safety and comfort in mind. The path is smooth, easy to navigate with white canes, service animals, and mobility aids, and allows marchers to move together as a united community. It’s the perfect setting to raise awareness and celebrate independence every step of the way.
